The common pleco, scientifically known as Hypostomus plecostomus, is a popular freshwater fish often kept in aquariums as a "scavenger" or algae eater. These fish are characterized by their flattened bodies, large, round heads, and armored plates covering their bodies instead of scales. They have sucker mouths on the underside of their head, used for rasping algae and other food from surfaces. While often associated with algae control, they are actually omnivores and require a varied diet
